Western Carolina University student Joseph Hader created this 30-second commercial, which has aired on on WLOS-TV and will air on MY-40, about the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band going to the Rose Parade. The WCU news services staff wrote the text, and Hader, a senior graphic design major at WCU, designed the look of the text and how it shows up between some of his footage from the band’s 2010 halftime show “Rock U.” (The WCU news services staff is particularly impressed with how Hader captured the vibration of the bass drum in slow motion right after the words “the world” show up.) The commercial could not use the actual music the band plays in the halftime show because of challenges in getting rights to broadcast the music, but Jon Henson, assistant band director, tracked down some royalty-free music from GarageBand that fit the piece.
